Urologists are involved in the treatment of spectrum of urology diseases such as prostate enlargement, bladder infection, urinary tract infection, chronic kidney disease, etc. They also receive oncology cases as the first point of contact, which are referred to uro Oncologists1.

A super specialty of Uro-oncology specializing in the urological oncologic procedures have emerged due to rising burden of urological cancers. Prostate cancer emerges as the most commonly seen ailment among Uro oncologists while among Urologists prostate enlargement is more common. Across disease type, majority patients report to doctor at the advanced stage of the disease1.

Trends in urological Cancers in India:

  •  A significant rise in the burden on urological disease specifically renal and prostate cancer1.
  • There is an increased adoption of robotic surgery in India. First robotic surgery for Urology was adopted in 2006 and the installation of robotics surgery equipments is rising exponentially. A significant rise in the no. of trained robotic surgeon s have been seen and is estimated to rise to 300 trained surgeons by 20201.

There are around 3000 urologists practicing in India, majority of them are placed in Metros and Tier 1 Cities. Urology segment is one of the fastest growing therapy area in India. In FY15, it grew by ~30% while the total market is at 17%2.
